The Experience & Collaborating on a Custom Furniture Design
Why Custom Furniture?
People come to custom furniture for different reasons. Sometimes it's practical: a dining table that actually fits a narrow room, an armoire designed around awkward dimensions, or built-in shelving that turns dead space into something useful.
Other times it's about wanting something better than what's available off the shelf — a piece with real materials, thoughtful proportions, and a personal connection to how it was made.
The Process
Design Consultation
We start with a conversation about your space, your needs, and the style you're drawn to. Whether you have a Pinterest board full of ideas or just a vague sense of what you want, I'll help you refine it into a clear direction.
Design Exploration
I develop sketches and renderings based on our conversation. This is where the piece starts to take shape — dimensions, proportions, and key details get explored and refined with your feedback.
Material & Hardware Selection
Together we choose the wood species, finish, and any hardware. I'll guide you through the options — from the warmth of walnut to the clean grain of white oak — so the material matches the design and your home.
Approval & Pricing
Once the design is finalized, I provide a transparent, itemized quote and clear timeline. No surprises. A 50% deposit reserves your spot in my schedule.
The Build
Each piece is personally built by me in my San Francisco workshop. I'll keep you updated along the way with progress photos so you can watch the piece come together.
Delivery & Installation
I coordinate delivery and handle installation if needed. You'll also receive care instructions specific to the wood and finish used, so your piece stays beautiful for years to come.
What Makes This Different
Every piece is designed specifically for you and your space. You work directly with the person building your furniture — no middlemen, no assembly lines. The result is something with real character, built from quality materials with joinery and details meant to last generations.
Custom furniture isn't always the right choice. For some needs, a well-made off-the-shelf option works perfectly. But when you want something truly considered — a piece designed around your life rather than a factory standard — that's where this process shines.
